Stephen Menotti is a freelancing trombonist living in Basel, Switzerland. Stephen studied with Mike Svoboda at the Musikhochschule in Basel (CH), James Desano at Oberlin Conservatory (USA), and with Mark Lusk. He has focused on developing a modern repertoire as a soloist and chamber musician. His passion for contemporary music has led him to perform with numerous ensembles including Klangforum Wien, musikFabrik, Remix Ensemble, Collegium Novum Zürich, Ensemble Phoenix, the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), and Ensemble Modern. Stephen is also a founding member of the Eunoia Quintet, Les trombones du Bâle, and the Two New duo. In these and various other chamber groups, Stephen collaborates regularly with composers and has commissioned and premiered numerous new works.
As a multifaceted performer, performing regularly in a variety of settings: as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral musician, and in theatre. In a trio of musicians, he performed in the children's theatre piece “Parzifal und der Rote Ritter” at the Schauspielhaus Frankfurt; the production was awarded the German theatre prize DER FAUST for best children's theatre production 2010. In 2014 he appeared again in a children's musical theatre production “DER KLEINE HARLEKIN” in a collaboration between the Taschen Oper Wien and La Fura dels Baus.
Stephen has appeared internationally as a soloist, including the Festival d'Autumne in Paris, and the Lucerne Festival. He has been invited to perform as a soloist with the Studio musikFabrik and with the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra. After participating in the Stockhausen Courses in Kürten in 2010, he has regularly performed music by Stockhausen and played in the world premiere of “SONNTAG aus LICHT” with Opera Köln and as a soloist in “SAMSTAG aus LICHT” with the Bayerischer Rundfunk, Musica Viva Munich, in the world premiere of “MITTWOCH aus LICHT” with the Birmingham Opera Company (UK), and in the 2016 Theater Basel production of "DONNERSTAG aus LICHT".
